Signals that a growing, repositioned or undifferentiated brand needs a refresh, and how to manage the risks.
Rebranding is expensive and risky, but done at the right time it carries a brand into its next phase of growth.
Signals it is time
- The audience or product range has changed
- The visual identity fails on digital (small screens, dark mode)
- You are visually confused with competitors
- A merger, new market or name change
- Employees struggle to explain the brand
Rebrand or refresh?
Not every problem needs a full rebrand. Simplifying the logo and updating colour and type, a “refresh”, is often enough and preserves brand memory.
Managing the risk
Involve existing customers, roll out in stages rather than in one day, and update every channel on the same day. Old visuals lingering is the most common cause of confusion.
